Belgrade Land Development Public Agency commenced the construction of the footbridge that will connect the Great Staircase Descent in Kalemegdan to the Sava Quay. The structure is going to connect the Belgrade Fortress to the pedestrian zone with a promenade along the Sava and Danube rivers. Furthermore, the footbridge will ensure safe crossing over the street loaded by heavy traffic and the railroad.
The value of the works including technical documents amounts to RSD 214 million, and construction is devided into two phases, as there are several spatial units. Phase 1 in addition to footbridge construction also includes development of the plateau and the area under and around the footbridge itself. Time for Phase 1 completion is 270 days as of the date of commencement of works. Phase 2 includes development of the Sava Promenade open areas and the footpaths at the slop of the Belgrade Fortress. Time for completion of Phase 2 is 150 days as of the date of commencement of works. Two-phased construction will ensure the efficiency and rationality of the Project both during its construction and during exploitation.
The footbridge is constructed in accordance with the conceptual design for the Kalemegdan Bridge prepared by the Public Enterprise Belgrade Fortress in 2008. In 2015, the conceptual design was implemented into the Identity-Mobility-Ecology Project for the pedestrian zone of Knez Mihajlova Street. The footbridge connecting the Sava Quay and the Belgrade Fortress ditch is comprised of two parts: first part includes a spiral approach walkway with the elevator tower and a sculpture on the top, and the second part includes a footbridge crossing over the street and the railroad, and a staircase leading to the Belgrade Fortress Great Staircase Descent bottom. The footbridge has two branches (two short steel bridges) connecting it to the parking lot on the roof of the Beton Hala (Concrete Hall) and to the green slope at the periphery of the Belgrade Fortress. The existing steel staircase on the side of the Concrete Hall used to approach the Sava promenade is going to be demolished, while the staircase on the front side of the Concrete Hall maintains.
